Information and Directions TO: OUR GUESTS AND INVITEES FOR VIRGINIA FALL RACES A DAY TO REMEMBER IN THE MIDDLEBURG COUNTRYSIDE! RE: BACKGROUND, SUGGESTIONS, AND DIRECTIONS TO THE VIRGINIA FALL RACES -- GLENWOOD PARK Information PLEASE: If you have not already RSVP'd, please access our web site at www.chb-tech.com, link to Events, and click on the RSVP link at the bottom of the page. You can also e-mail me directly at charles.botwick@chb-tech.com, and please also confirm the number of adults and children (and ages) attending. If your address is received on or before September 29, your ticket for admission and parking will be mailed to you; thereafter, your name will placed on a list for "will call" pick-up. Each ticket allows for one automobile and up to four occupants -- additional persons over age 12 may incur a small fee. Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged. As described below, there are large grassy areas for infants, toddlers, teenagers, and adult children. (Ages help our caterer for planning purposes.) We look forward to seeing you!! Note: For Government employees only, if there is concern regarding the gratuity value of this event, please contact us and we will provide necessary information. This event is a widely attended hospitality event, and meets generally accepted limits of gratuity value as we understand them from the many Agencies with whom we have spoken. SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS/TIME TO ARRIVE: Race events begin promptly at 12 Noon and proceed to the better part of 5 PM. The first event is very special and is a real photo opportunity. This first event is the Finals of the American Field Hunter Championship, and is a special addition to the normal slate of steeplechase races. For this event, the scent of a fox will be dragged over the course and riders in full hunt dress and regalia will be judged for their form and prowess as they negotiate the field. In addition, race fans will be allowed to venture beyond the normal fenced boundary out onto the field for a closer view of the proceedings. Allow yourself adequate time to make your way up the country lane (Rt. 626) to the entrance to Glenwood Park (traffic can back up a bit), get through the gate, park, and then walk the final 100-200 yards to where our hospitality tent and viewing area is located. If anyone, due to physical limitation or disability, has trouble walking the 100 or so yards from the parking area, please contact me and we will arrange for you to park to the immediate rear of our hospitality area. EVENTS PROCEED RAIN OR SHINE. Don't be spooked by light or early rain, as this usually passes. Especially in the event of the hoped for sunny day, large brim hats or visors are a good idea, as the sun can be surprisingly strong this time of year. There also will be plenty of shade. Consider also that a light breeze is considerably stronger in the open expanse of the Steeplechase grounds. If the weather looks threatening, or, God forbid, it is actually raining, a large umbrella is a good idea. We will have a fairly large tent (20' x 60'). In the only year (1 out of 7) in which we had inclement weather, everyone fit underneath the tent and consumed copious quantities of the very adequate supplies of spirits and hot beverages. Short of a total downpour, the venue is a beautiful experience. More on dress below. To watch the races, field glasses are fun to have. While there will be plenty of chairs and tables, you may want to bring small folding or other chairs and/or a blanket, particularly if you have children who would enjoy spreading out in the large grassy areas. The event will be catered with plenty to eat and drink for adults and children. DRESS IS "DRESSY CASUAL." I have told people who have asked about dress that the #1 criteria is to be comfortable. The races do tend to be a dressy affair. Many ladies take advantage of the races to sport fine haberdashery and attire. For men, a light sports coat or English Tweed (with or without tie) is de rigueur, slacks and a polo shirt are fine, and if it's a hot day and you prefer shorts, that's OK, too. The average race attire is decidedly "dressy casual." However, again, the number one criteria is to dress to your own personal level of comfort and style, remembering to pay attention to the weather, and to be prepared for the vagaries of a fall day. Remember that breezes are stronger in the open expanse of the venue.
